Legal personality (incorporation):
Under Article 1, §2.1 of the Act of August 12, 1911 [4] KU Leuven is enjoying a sui generis legal personality as a private legal person, following the publication of its Charter of foundation (“Oprichtingsakte”) in the annexes to the Belgian Official Gazette[5] of July 1, 1970.
In accordance with Article II.18 Flemish Code of Higher Education [6] KU Leuven fulfills a threefold mission of public interest in the field of higher education, scientific research and societal and scientific services. Thereunto the university enjoys full legal capacity.
KU Leuven is a nonprofit organization. In accordance with Article 4 Act of August 12, 1911 and Article 21, §8 of the KU Leuven Statutes, the remaining assets of KU Leuven in the event of dissolution will be spent on the educational or research purposes or on the purposes of social services, including health care, that the the Board of Trustees will select.
